Join us for the 2nd Annual Terry Anderson Memorial Golf Tournament

We would like to invite you to participate in the 2nd Annual Terry Anderson Memorial Golf Tournament, Saturday, August 28th. An 18 hole shotgun will be played at The Wilds Golf Club in Prior Lake beginning at 1:30pm. A 9-hole event will be held at Braemar’s Exective Course in Edina beginning at 4:00pm. Even if you don’t golf, you are welcome to join us for the evening. Dinner will follow golf, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the studio. Spouses are welcome to join us.

All proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Terry Anderson Memorial Fund, which supports the Terry Anderson Photography Scholarships and the American Heart Association. Terry loved the game of golf because it was challenging and provided him time outdoors with friends. It seems a fitting way to honor him, while helping others.

Guess The Image contest winner

We had a number of correct guesses this time around. So we threw all the correct guesses in a hat and Mike Bleckwehl was our lucky winner of two tickets to AMC theaters. I'm sure Mike will glad to take his fiance out for a nice romantic movie. Enjoy.

Greg Kamin took this luge track photo at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Whistler, British Columbia.

It captures the German Gold medalist, Felix Loch blazing across the track just past the final and fastest curve.

Greg spent several days on assignment for Karl's Global Events in Whistler and Vancouver.

TKA goes back to school

A few ugly dolls and a couple of pretty hands were subjects for the latest pro bono project at TKA Photo. The 3rd annual Bring Your Layouts to Life photo contest was held in December 2009.

Three art direction and design students from local design schools were chosen based on their submitted advertising campaign concepts and layouts.

Caitlan Nolan, a senior at MCAD, won for her Ugly Dolls campaign. Nolan worked with Jeff Schmieg to execute product images of the stuffed dolls. “I thought things ran so smoothly and efficiently,” said Nolan about her photo session. “I have a better idea of what to expect when I do any photo shoot in the future.”

“I was amazed how he [Schmieg] could fix a funny reflection or lighting problem in my photo shoot,” said Nolan. “I thought he was amazing and had so much knowledge about photography.”

Jonathan Anthes, a senior at Miami Ad School, created a campaign for Dutch Boy Paint. Anthes’ campaign was created around the tagline of “true match.” TKA Photographer, Bill Bartlett photographed models’ hands in studio. With each image, Bartlett matched the lighting from Anthes’ stock photos to fit the scene.

“The photo shoot was awesome,” said Anthes. “Bill was great and so willing to help fulfill my vision. I was really impressed with his on the fly solutions for the lighting on the hand to really match that of the image.”

“Jonathan’s concepts were well thought out and were highly praised by all our creative directors that participated in the event,” said Bartlett.

Dewey Koshenina photographed for the winner from Brainco. Gabriel Goldstein created a campaign for Moleskine art supplies.

Koshenina created a small set in the studio for Goldstein’s images. Myron Wolf, TKA Assistant, helped Dewey with painting for the set. TKA Photo has an extensive supply of backgrounds, walls, and props available to clients.

“I really liked the fact that exactly what I was imagining could be created within the studio space,” said Goldstein.

Judging of the contest was conducted by Spencer Smith, Creative Director at Concept Group, Inc and Jason Losiniski, Creative Director at Regis Corporation.

“I think it is great to help out these students. The work was really good this year and tough to judge,” said Losiniski.

1st annual Terry Anderson Memorial Golf Tournament

Terry loved to golf. He loved to talk about his game: a new driver he couldn’t wait to try out, his great shots, his bad shots, and of course – the weather. He loved the challenging nature of the game and being able to spend time with friends outdoors, having fun. When he wasn't golfing, he was often thinking about it, taking lessons, trying new courses and playing old favorites. One of those old familiar tracks is Braemar Golf Course in Edina.

Braemar will be the perfect setting for a golfing tournament, held in Terry's honor. Please join his family, co-workers and friends for a challenging, yet fun game of golf on Saturday Sept. 19, 2009. We are offering an 18-hole shotgun event starting at 1:30 p.m, plus a 9-hole event on Braemar’s executive course starting at 3:30 p.m.

We'll head to the studio afterward for hors d’oeuvres, beer, wine, prizes, and good light-hearted fun . . . just the way Terry would have liked it! We will also present an award to the winners of the tournament. If you can’t make the golf, you are most welcome to join us for the food and fun at the studio starting at 6:30 p.m.

The Terry Anderson Memorial Fund

A fund has been established in memory of the “teacher” in Terry. Terry, who was mentored by Glen and Sue Silker, always wanted to continue the legacy of educating budding photographers. Terry was a very patient educator of the craft he so loved. His accomplishments as a photographer were only strengthened by his willingness and enthusiasm to share with others. This fund will help support the training and education of other students.

In seemingly good health, Terry died suddenly of a heart attack Feb. 23, 2009. The Terry Anderson Memorial Fund will also support the American Heart Association. The priority of the AHA is to fund research that increases an understanding of the causes, treatments and prevention of cardiovascular diseases and strokes.

Sweet Taste of Summer - Watermelon Coolers

Enjoy the rest of this beautiful summer with a cool, sweet refreshing beverage.

INGREDIENTS:
• 3/4 cup sugar
• 3/4 cup water
• 1 cup fresh lime juice
• 3 cups white rum
• 4 cups seedles watermelon
• 8 cups crushed ice
• Watermelon spears and mint sprigs, for garnish

SERVINGS: MAKES 2 1/2 QUARTS

DIRECTIONS:
In a saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Bring to a simmer over moderate heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Remove from the heat and let cool. In a blender, combine half of the sugar syrup with half of the lime juice, rum and watermelon chunks and blend until combined. Add half of the ice and blend until smooth, then pour into a large pitcher. Repeat with the remaining ingredients. Serve in chilled glasses, garnish with watermelon spears and top with mint sprigs. The watermelon mixture can be blended earlier in the day and refrigerated. Blend with ice just before serving. Tastes just as refreshing in a non-alcoholic version.

The Future of Terry Anderson Photography

Since Terry’s passing, we are even more dedicated to the work we love and the clients we most sincerely appreciate. With loss comes change, but not our commitment to excellence and providing the kind of customer service Terry taught so well. Terry’s wife of 31 years, Cindy, has taken on the responsibilities of president of TKA Photo. Cindy has been the studio CFO for the past 15 years, but more importantly, she was Terry’s partner and confidant in and out of the studio.

“We are so grateful for our clients and friends who have provided us with their prayers, love and support,” says Cindy. “I look forward to meeting the challenges ahead with the support of my gifted staff, their trust in me, and our unwavering dedication to our clients.”

Tribute to Terry Anderson

We want to take some time and focus on the life in pictures of Terry Anderson. Terry died suddenly of a heart attack on February 23, 2009. He was 59.

This special tribute to our esteemed colleague and mentor, will highlight his passion for photography as seen in some of his favorite subject matter.

The Work ~

Terry became an artist with a camera, but never let a lens distance himself from people. Terry always had a joke – not always a funny one, but he would find a way to get it in, set people at ease and make you smile. For this reason, the career was perfect for Terry.

The Pastime ~

Terry was an avid golfer. When he wasn’t on the course playing golf, he was talking about it, or trying to come up with ways to stay close to the game. Terry photographed the action for the U.S. Open in 1991 when it was hosted by Hazeltine National Golf Club.

One of Terry’s clients was the Grand View Lodge in Brainerd, Minn. Terry would spend a few days each year at the lodge and photograph the architectural interiors, exteriors, and activities. Terry would also photograph Grand View's championship golf courses the Pines, Preserve, and Deacon’s Lodge. Most of the time, he would photograph the courses by helicopter. If he happened to shoot from the ground, his golf clubs were not very far away.

The Cars ~

Terry loved cars. Growing up in Fairmont, Minnesota, Terry spent a lot of time around cars. As a teenager, if he wasn’t “cruising,” then he and his buddies were talking about cars.

The Clients ~

How can you distinguish between a client and a friend? With Terry, there was very little distinction, if any — he treated each client with respect, care and consideration. Ask any of his clients and you will hear a story of how Terry made them feel welcome, special, and yes, even called them friend. Following are a few of the many kind words we have received from clients since his passing.

“Terry was a rare blend of talent and sincere friendliness. He managed to bring kindness, fairness and good humor to even the prickliest of business problems.”

A “little” fun for the Holidays

We’ve been nutcrackers, elves, toys, and this year we were our kids!

Each year the photographers take turns coming up with the concept and creation for the studio Holiday card. Terry’s concept for the 2008 card was one we all could really relate to.

Getting that perfect Holiday family photo is just not as easy as it sounds — even for professional photographers. A typical shoot is filled with squirming, whining, crying — and that’s just us parents.

We owe a special thanks to set stylist Laurie Goeman. She created a beautiful, warm, holiday environment in the middle of our 35-foot concrete cove. With more than 20 wall selections available in our studio prop room, TKA Photo specializes in custom set creation and design such as the rolling 1,500 pound stone fireplace which was recently built by Dewey and Myron for a client.

And yes, since the kids were all "model" children, they were given presents to open after the shoot. Thanks to Terry and Cindy for the thoughtful and fun gifts.

TKA goes back to school

Terry Anderson Photography awarded five senior art direction and design students a complimentary photoshoot. The students, from Miami Ad School, Brainco, and Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) were selected in Terry Anderson Photography’s annual “Bring Your Layouts to Life” contest.

The contest awarded students Brett Essman and Michelle Swanson of Brainco, the team of Donny Brunner and Josh Feuerhelm of Miami Ad School and Leanora Porter of MCAD with a half-day photoshoot on November 13, 2008.

“We enjoy working with these young art directors,” Terry Anderson said. “They get a chance to polish up their books and we enjoy the potential of added portfolio images.”

Tami Galvin, a talented prop, set and makeup stylist who works regularly with the studio, donated her expertise for the three models photographed by Bill. She lended a hand on the other shoots as well.

“I donated my time and thought it was a very fun and valuable experience! I truly believe in the practice of "paying it forward,” said Galvin.

Leanora Porter, who shot with Bill Bartlett on her “A Flavor for Every Craver” campaign for Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, said she had a “fantastic experience.” “What a great opportunity! My new layouts with the new photography have been added to my portfolio.”

Brett Essman called the experience “amazing,” saying “I knew I wanted to go into this field, but after my first real-life photoshoot with Dewey (Koshenina), I know this is my calling. Thank you so much Terry for this contest.”

Dewey photographed a series of three ads for Carhartt clothing targeting women who are not afraid of rugged manual labor. “We discussed the possibility of a location shoot, but decided we have the space, sets, props and materials to build the environments in our studio,” said Koshenina.

Koshenina used Brett’s electronic layout as a template in Capture One to best compose the shot. (Capture One is the software program TKA uses to capture the high resolution camera files from the Phase One digital camera backs.)

Jeff Schmieg photographed a three-piece series of print ads for Gorilla Glue. Donny Brunner & Josh Feuerhelm created the concepts with a retro, 1970s feel.

“Our shoot presented several challenges, one of which included gluing a 400 lb. TV to the wall,” said Feuerhelm. He added, “Jeff, our advisor and photographer, constantly followed up with us during pre-production to work out several solutions so we could properly execute our vision.”

Myron Wolf, TKA photo assistant, worked with Schmieg to gut and mount the TV. Wolf also built the wall set consisting of retro-style wood paneling and a finished texture ceiling. All building materials are part of the extensive props at TKA Photo.

“I did plenty of retouching to remove stands that supported heavy console TV and also duplicated a lamp in one photo because they needed two,” said Schmieg.

“Terry Anderson truly wants to do his part in elevating the creative and advertising community in Minneapolis,” said Brunner. He added “Everyone there was very helpful, insightful and a blast to work with.”

Judging of the contest, which brought in twelve entries, was done by a select group of three Twin Cities’ Art and Creative Directors: Randy Justice Creative Director and owner of Tango Creative, Scott Pfeil Art Director with SK Marketing and Tom Bleakly of Tom Bleakly Advertising, Inc.

Terry said, “The studio has all the resources necessary to pull together the shoot, from model selecting to set building and propping. We’re very good at creating the environment needed to communicate the message.” He continued, “We had a lot of great entries and plan to do this again next year.”

The third annual “Bring Your Layouts to Life” contest will be held in Fall of 2009. It is open to juniors and seniors at MCAD, Brainco, and Miami Ad School.

Five senior art direction and design students from Twin Cities’ Brainco, Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) and Miami Ad School were selected in Terry Anderson Photography’s “Bring Your Layouts to Life” contest.

The contest awarded students Brett Essman and Michelle Swanson of Brainco, the team of Donny Brunner and Josh Feuerhelm of Miami Ad School and Leanora Porter of MCAD with a half-day photoshoot on November 13, 2008.

Brett Essman called the experience “amazing,” saying “I knew I wanted to go into this field, but after my first real-life photoshoot with Dewey (Koshenina), I know this is my calling.” Art director Donny Brunner and his copywriter partner Josh Feuerhelm, were also grateful for the experience.

Brunner said the advice and pre-production work from photographer Jeff Schmieg turned a “good campaign into a professionally-produced ad that looks great in my book.” He continued, “Terry truly wants to do his part in elevating the creative and advertising community in Minneapolis. The opportunity to actually produce a campaign has been a great learning experience and something I won’t soon forget.” Feuerhelm agreed, stating, “We were able to work with an awesome crew in a fantastic studio and leave with great looking ads, just for entering a contest. You can’t beat that.”

Leanora Porter, who shot with Bill Bartlett on her campaign for Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, said she had a “fantastic experience.” “What a great opportunity. My new layouts with the new photography have been added to my portfolio.”

Super Heroes and Rock Stars…

Yes, that’s right, just another day! That is, just another day for Jeff, whose recent project with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety required skills beyond those of mere mortals! The campaign's goal was to promote the use of high visibility clothing and equipment for motorcyclists by creating outlandish characters which stand out on their own.

The fun and challenging aspect of this job was creating the Kid Rock-like superstar and superhero characters from the ground up. Jeff, with the help of stylist Tami Galvin, spent many hours searching for just the right costume materials and the perfect models to bring these characters to life. Throw in a little Photoshop artistry to enhance the Super Hero's muscular build and voila, we have a set of photos that thrilled our client. Way to go, Jeff and Tami. What a dynamic duo!

Myron and the chicken bus

What’s it like to ride on a bus where chickens outnumber passengers by at least 2 to 1? Just ask Myron, our studio coordinator/assistant extraordinaire. As most of you know, Myron recently returned from Guatemala’s Lake Atitlan region where he’s worked with several communities from three language groups that border on this lake. Although beautiful, the Lake Atitlan area has been isolated from much of the progress of the last 100 years.
Its people still live in poverty and suffer from being "second class" citizens of their own country. Myron’s church youth and adults have developed a strong partnership with twelve like-minded churches in the region.
Working alongside these church partners, Myron and his travel partners have made a difference in this area through construction projects, medical clinics, children’s ministries, water purification and education, as well as computer literacy and leadership training.
